History of APBA
The American power Boat Association was started in the early 1900's in
response to the number of power boats cruising around Long Island Sound waters with the
desire to race, but no fair system to measure who's boat was the best or who was the
better driver. Since these boats were of many varieties and capabilities, it was agreed
that "racing and time allowance" rules woulb be necessary to handicap all boats
equally. On April 22, 1903, representatives of 20 yacht clubs meet, adopted the name
American Power Boat Association, set up a constitution, adopted rules and elected
officers. Today, the APBA conducts organized racing for all types of power boats from the
spectacular Unlimited hydroplanes to the family runabout with may participate in an
outboard event. The american Power Boat Association also runs R/C Model; Personal
Watercraft; Jet Boats; Inflatables; Drag (Outboard and Inboard); Stock, Modified, PRO
(Runabout and Hydro); Inboard; Inboard Endurance; Outboard
Performace craft: and special events (for others who have different requirements.)
Over 300 regattas are sanctioned annuyally in the United States and Canada. Nearly 4,00
boats are gistered by racing members. Clubs, officials and other classifications bring the
total membership to almost 10,00.
